Some symptoms of an allergic reaction resemble those of a cold (cough, nasal congestion, watery eyes). However, if they appear unexpectedly, are not accompanied by fever, and disappear just as suddenly, this may indicate an allergy. You should therefore book an appointment with an allergist to determine whether you have an allergy. Another reliable sign of allergy is hives — a skin rash over the body that appears quickly and may persist for several days.
You should also undergo allergy testing for anesthetics before visiting a dentist or starting treatment involving specific medications. If you suspect that you have an allergy, be sure to consult a specialist, because failure to follow simple precautions can cause any such immune-system malfunction to lead to anaphylactic shock and death.
When should you see an allergist?
You should see an allergist if you notice any of the following symptoms: Skin rash and redness (hives); Irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat after eating; Itchy skin; Watery eyes; Runny nose and cough of unknown cause; Difficulty breathing; Gastrointestinal problems.
