A branch of medicine that studies diseases of the lower respiratory tract. Symptoms of respiratory diseases include a dry or productive cough, blood in the sputum, attacks of suffocation, difficulty breathing, and chest pain that worsens with physical exertion. Main diseases. A pulmonologist treats lower respiratory-tract diseases such as pneumonia, acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, pleurisy, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, and others.
